In a move that will excite longtime Android users, Google is bringing back lock screen widgets with Android 16. This long-lost feature, which was available in early Android versions before being removed, is making a long-overdue comeback.
A Feature Once Forgotten, Now Revived
Currently, lock screen widgets are exclusive to the Pixel Tablet, but Google has confirmed that they will soon be available on more Android smartphones and tablets. This revival is expected to enhance personalization and convenience, making glanceable information more accessible without unlocking the device.
When Will Lock Screen Widgets Arrive?
Android 16 is anticipated to roll out in June 2025, and shortly after its release, developers will be able to integrate lock screen widgets into their apps. While the feature is not officially enabled in the current Android 16 beta, Android Authority managed to activate it and uncovered some interesting details.
On the Pixel Tablet, widgets are accessed by swiping right on the lock screen. However, on smartphones, activating them requires enabling the Android screensaver mode, which only works when the device is charging or docked. This approach may change as Google refines the implementation before the full release.
A More Flexible Approach for Developers
Google is giving developers more control over how lock screen widgets will function. This means we could see different implementations from various smartphone manufacturers, tailoring the experience based on device type and user preference.
The return of lock screen widgets is a welcome change, aligning Android with Apple’s Live Activities while offering users greater customization options.
