The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) plans to deploy 170,000 Apple MacBook Neo laptops. Apple CEO John Ternus announced the plan on the company’s Nov. 2 earnings call.

Ternus called it Apple’s “biggest education deal ever for Mac,” according to Gadget Pilipinas. He said the laptops will go to teachers and staff. This is a planned deployment, and reports do not show that any laptops have reached recipients yet.

The contract value, price per laptop and delivery schedule have not been disclosed. The laptop is the Apple MacBook Neo, Apple’s most affordable MacBook.

Who will receive the laptops?

Philstar Tech reports that the laptops will go to teaching and non-teaching personnel in more than 16,400 public K-12 schools. The Inquirer Technology links the rollout to the DepEd Computerization Program.

Reported uses include lesson preparation, administrative work and classroom activities. Recipients also get access to the Apple Education Community, which Philstar Tech says includes more than 70 lesson plans made by Filipino educators.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said, “Investing in our teachers is investing in the future of our learners.”

The reports do not publish a recipient list or a process for individual teachers to claim a laptop. One outlet also lists students, but Ternus’s remarks as reported refer to teachers and staff. No student application process has been reported.

What is the MacBook Neo?

Apple announced the MacBook Neo on March 4, 2026. According to Apple’s Philippine newsroom, it has an A18 Pro chip with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU. It also has a 13-inch Liquid Retina display and an aluminum enclosure.

Apple rates the battery at up to 16 hours on a single charge. Apple tested preproduction units with 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage in January 2026, and real-world results vary.

macOS includes Pages, Numbers and Keynote for documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Schools may still need to check that their existing software, peripherals and workflows work with macOS.

How much is the DepEd deal?

Neither Apple nor DepEd has disclosed the contract value or the price per laptop. The configuration, supplier arrangements, warranty and maintenance terms also remain unclear in the reports reviewed.

For reference, the MacBook Neo starts at ₱49,990 in the Philippines for 256GB, after Apple raised prices in June. Apple’s Philippine education store listed it from ₱42,990 on Nov. 3.

Those are public retail prices, not the price DepEd will pay. A government contract can include different equipment, services and terms. Multiplying a retail price by 170,000 would not show the real cost.

Why it matters

The deployment could put new computers in the hands of many Philippine public-school staff. Its impact will depend on how the laptops are allocated and supported, including training, repairs and software compatibility.

Public contract terms and a delivery schedule would also let readers judge the cost and follow the rollout. We will update this article when DepEd or Apple publishes them. Browse more laptops and PCs on TechPipino.
