Spotify is asking some Premium Family members to verify their household through an in-person QR scan. Its Philippine support page gives notified members seven days to complete the check. Missing it can prevent them from joining a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months.
9to5Google reported the checks on Oct. 19. Spotify documents the process, but the support page does not show when it began or identify every market receiving prompts.
How Spotify QR verification works
The plan manager displays a code through the mobile app’s profile menu, under Your Premium, then Manage. The member scans it with their phone camera while both people are together.
Spotify says the code refreshes every few seconds. Both phones need the latest app. If scanning fails, check their date and time settings, then close and reopen Spotify.
For a household receiving a prompt, the practical task is arranging the scan before the deadline. Check the notification rather than assuming the plan manager has already completed it for everyone.
What the 12-month restriction means
Spotify’s stated QR consequence concerns joining a different Family or Duo plan. Other subscription options remain available, so describing it as a year-long ban from Spotify would overstate the policy.
The page separately explains that failed address verification removes a member from the shared plan and moves them to Free. It allows rejoining the same plan, subject to its rules. That address-check explanation should not be treated as a separate promise about every QR failure.
What Philippine subscribers should know
The QR instructions appear on Spotify’s Philippine English support page as well as its US page. That establishes local documentation, but does not prove every Philippine subscriber has received the feature.
Spotify’s Philippine Family plan guide describes the subscription as covering up to six family members living together, including the manager. Members use separate accounts and their own logins; the manager handles payment.
Its Philippine Premium Family terms already require family members to share an address and allow later checks. The QR process therefore adds a verification method to an existing household requirement.
Neither the reviewed instructions nor the terms specify how often QR prompts will appear. They also do not explain exceptions for members temporarily away from home. Those questions remain open.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone on Premium Family need to scan now?
Spotify says some members may be asked. Follow the prompt on your account; the available documentation does not establish a universal check.
Is one shared login enough for the household?
No. Spotify’s Family guide says members have individual accounts. Household eligibility and account identity are separate requirements.
Is the household rule new?
No. Spotify’s Philippine terms, dated July 1, 2020, already require family members to live at the same address.
Why it matters
The distinction is between a plan’s eligibility rules and how the service checks them. Subscribers should understand both before relying on a shared subscription.
For Philippine households, the useful next step is to watch for an actual prompt and leave time to resolve problems. A regional help page is useful evidence of the process, but it cannot tell you whether your account has been selected.
