AMD FSR 4 upscaling comes to Radeon RX 6000 GPUs

AMD’s latest FSR developer kit extends machine-learning upscaling to older Radeon graphics cards and select Ryzen processors.

PC gamers with an older Radeon graphics card have another way to improve the balance between image quality and performance in supported games. AMD released FSR SDK 2.4 on Oct. 28, 2026.

The update extends AMD’s machine-learning-based FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 technology to Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards and selected Ryzen processors. It gives game developers the tools to bring the newer upscaler to more hardware, including some laptops and gaming handhelds.

There is an important catch: support in the developer kit does not mean every game will immediately offer the feature. The game and its implementation still matter. For more PC gaming coverage, see our Gaming news hub.

Which AMD hardware is supported?

Radeon RX 6000 series desktop graphics cards join the previously supported RX 7000 and RX 9000 series in AMD’s latest upscaling release. AMD also lists these Ryzen processor families:

  • Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 series
  • Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400 series
  • Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme, and Ryzen Z2 A

These processors appear in different types of devices, from laptops and mini PCs to gaming handhelds. AMD says it uses a smaller, optimized machine-learning model on some integrated graphics to suit their more limited resources, while other supported hardware uses a larger model.

Check the exact processor in your device before assuming it qualifies. Having a Ryzen chip or Radeon graphics alone does not automatically mean the new upscaler is supported. AMD’s FSR Upscaling page has the current hardware list.

What does FSR upscaling do?

Upscaling renders a game at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image for a higher-resolution display. The goal is to reduce the graphics workload while keeping the image looking sharp.

AMD says its machine-learning-based upscaler can improve image detail and reduce visual artifacts compared with older FSR versions. Those are AMD’s claims, not TechPipino testing. Actual results can vary depending on the game, graphics hardware, resolution, and selected quality mode.

For PC gamers in the Philippines, the appeal is straightforward: a graphics card you already own could gain access to a newer upscaling option in compatible games. Whether it is worth using will depend on how that option looks and performs on your setup.

Does this also bring FSR 4 frame generation to RX 6000?

Not as part of the new FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2 support. Upscaling and frame generation are separate technologies: upscaling reconstructs an image, while frame generation creates additional frames between rendered ones.

AMD lists Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs and newer as the hardware requirement for its machine-learning FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2. The RX 6000 announcement should therefore be understood as an expansion of FSR 4 upscaling support, not a promise that every FSR 4 feature now runs on those cards.

When can you use it in games?

FSR SDK 2.4 is available to developers, but players will need a compatible game implementation. Check the game’s graphics settings and patch notes for its supported FSR version and hardware.

The update also adds Vulkan support for upscaling and frame generation. AMD says the new Ryzen integrated-graphics and Vulkan support is supplied through SDK files shipped with a game and does not require a specific driver version for those components.

That does not mean an existing Vulkan game using FSR 3.1 will automatically gain the new machine-learning upscaler. AMD says those games need the relevant SDK integration. GamingOnLinux also covered the release.

Should you upgrade your GPU?

If you already own a Radeon RX 6000 card, this is a welcome update to watch, especially if your favorite games add support. It is not a reason by itself to assume every game will run faster or look better.

If you are weighing a new card, keep in mind that graphics hardware costs are under pressure. Our report on rising PC hardware prices covers how costs are changing, which may matter before you buy.

Why it matters

A newer upscaler on older Radeon cards could extend the useful life of hardware many players already own. The real benefit depends on games adopting the SDK and on independent testing, which has not been published yet.

Frequently asked questions

Which AMD graphics cards get the new upscaler?

AMD lists Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics cards for FSR Upscaling 4.1.2. Some Ryzen processors with integrated graphics are also listed.

Will my existing games upgrade automatically?

Not necessarily. Games need the relevant FSR SDK integration. AMD says existing Vulkan games using FSR 3.1 are not upgraded automatically through the driver.

Does RX 6000 get FSR 4 frame generation too?

No. AMD lists Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs and newer for its machine-learning FSR Frame Generation 4.0.2.
