Windows 11 8GB improvements: What Microsoft changed

Microsoft says Windows 11 is more responsive on 8GB PCs. Here is what changed, what its 20% and 40% figures mean, and how to get the update.

Microsoft says its Windows 11 8GB improvements can make everyday interactions more responsive and help PCs handle multitasking more efficiently. Its figures come from specific measurements, so they should not be read as a guaranteed speed boost for every laptop.

The company recommends Windows 11 version 26H2, build 26300.9818 or later, along with updated Microsoft apps. Availability can vary by device and region.

What changed for 8GB PCs?

Microsoft says it adjusted how Windows compresses memory, moves data to storage and retrieves it on 8GB PCs. Compression keeps some less-active data in a smaller form in RAM. Paging moves data to the drive when needed, but retrieving it from storage can take longer.

The company says the changes can keep up to 2GB more active data in memory under its stated conditions. Actual results depend on the device and workload. This does not add physical RAM.

Windows also gives some immediate actions more priority and backs off background work while a person is active. Microsoft says Widgets loads only when opened on PCs with 8GB or less, while inactive Edge tabs sleep after 15 minutes by default.

What do the 20% and 40% figures mean?

Microsoft says common interactions, such as opening Start, Settings or File Explorer, were up to 20% more responsive in telemetry comparisons between specified Windows builds. That is a measurement of selected interactions, not every action on a PC.

The up-to-40% multitasking result came from Microsoft’s internal lab test on one HP OmniBook 3 with 8GB of RAM and a Snapdragon X Plus eight-core processor. The test opened 20 Edge tabs, a 4K video, large Office files, Outlook and File Explorer in sequence while keeping them open.

Microsoft compared the time needed to complete that workflow across two Windows builds. Different hardware, files and background activity can produce different results. The company says this scenario is not a general benchmark.

How to get the Windows 11 8GB improvements

Open Settings, select Windows Update and check for updates. Microsoft recommends turning on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” and using version 26H2, build 26300.9818 or later. Keep Edge, Microsoft 365 and Teams current because some improvements come through app updates or the Microsoft Store. Microsoft notes that some app-launch gains also need Microsoft Edge 150 or later.

If the update does not appear, its availability may differ by device or region. Check your device maker’s support information and Windows Update rather than assuming every PC receives it at once.

Is 8GB now enough?

For browsing, documents and other light work, an 8GB PC may be adequate, depending on the apps open at once. Microsoft’s changes are intended to make that existing capacity work more efficiently.

More demanding work can still benefit from more memory. Microsoft points to 3D modeling, advanced video editing and large data workloads as examples where 16GB or more can help. Processor, storage, cooling and the apps themselves also affect performance.

Frequently asked questions

Does the update turn 8GB into 16GB?

No. It changes how Windows manages available memory. It does not install additional physical RAM.

Will every 8GB laptop be 40% faster?

No. Microsoft’s figure refers to completing a particular multitasking sequence on one tested laptop. It is not a promise for all tasks or devices.

What if Windows Update does not offer 26H2 yet?

Availability can vary. Check Windows Update and your PC maker’s guidance, and keep supported apps updated while you wait.

Why it matters

The changes could help owners keep an existing 8GB PC useful for everyday work. Buyers should still choose memory for their own workload and check whether a laptop can be upgraded later.
