Instagram Edits for Mac gives creators a desktop option for short-form video projects that need a larger screen, mouse and keyboard. Instagram announced the editor on Nov. 5, 2026, according to TechCrunch.

The app adds a full multi-track timeline, keyframes and audio waveforms for more involved projects.

What can you do in Edits for Mac?

Multiple tracks let creators layer clips and other elements on a timeline. Keyframes control changes over time, and waveforms help line up cuts with sound.

Instagram also lists licensed, royalty-free music, sound and video effects, and automatic captions in multiple languages. Creators can import custom fonts and LUTs, and set keyboard shortcuts, including shortcuts imported from other editing software. Color wheels and curves handle grading.

Projects can be horizontal or vertical, and exports are watermark-free in 4K. Creators can publish straight to Instagram with tags and a location.

Can you move a project from your phone to a Mac?

Only some assets sync. Instagram says saved audio and text styles from the mobile app carry over to the desktop app.

Seamless editing of one project across desktop and mobile is not available yet. Instagram says it is working toward it. If you start videos on your phone and finish them on a computer, check the current transfer options first.

Who can download it?

Instagram says Edits for desktop is free and runs on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later). It is not available for Windows. Download it from the official Edits desktop page and sign in with an Instagram account, which keeps your projects synced. The page does not mention regional restrictions, so check that it works for your account.

Instagram plans weekly desktop updates and will keep developing the mobile app, which it says more than 50 million creators use.

Why it matters

Edits enters a space where CapCut has offered desktop apps for Windows and Mac since 2021, TechCrunch notes. A desktop timeline could make longer, layered edits easier than a small phone screen.

The deciding questions are whether your Mac has Apple silicon, whether the music suits your platform and whether the project-transfer options fit your workflow.
